Is writing at home a real job? Maybe for Steven King. But is it a real job for aspiring authors who haven’t been published and aren’t seeing any money yet? Most authors (including me) think so, but there are always those who disagree, who see it as a lazy excuse to stay home.
The great write-at-home debate has finally been settled in the Yahoo universe.
This Yahoo news article officially classified “Writer/Editor” as number 9 in the top 10 legitimate stay-at-home jobs. Whatever you or I may think about Yahoo news’ idea of journalism, we must admit that it reflects the appetites and attitudes of pop culture. If Yahoo says it, most everyone is going to ingest it by the end of the day.
So those of us who write full-time at home, let’s raise our fists high and claim the respect we deserve as hard workers!

Well put. For myself, I’ve found writing to be the most demanding endurance activity on the planet. It’s a true discipline not for the faint of heart. I’ve also found writing to be very rewarding—like a gift to myself. Am I paid to write? No, but I have hope that I will achieve that, and I am not in some delusion of grandure I’ll see millions roll in my back pocket. I’d be happy if only to get enough to make a decent living—an ivy covered cottage, picket fence, a trip to Bora Bora once a year. For that alone I work as hard as I can everyday to piece together the stories that saturate my brain. If anyone thinks writing is a lazy person’s excuse to not get a “real job”—think again. Writing is work that doesn’t get too much more real.
You said it even better than I could! It is an exercise in endurance, that’s for sure.
By the way, I love your name. Horrorible. It’s also a pretty good descriptive word for the face on the homepage of your blog! 🙂
Thanks for the comment about my blog’s name. It was nice of you to say. That name came about from a dry sense of humor/wordplay. The picture is actually me—taken and photo-chop’d by my wife.
I look forward to seeing more of your blogs.
Cheers!
